Every Godzilla Movie in Order: Toho Eras and MonsterVerse

The complete Godzilla movie order, separated into Toho's Showa, Heisei, Millennium and modern runs plus the American MonsterVerse timeline.

Every Godzilla Movie in Order: Toho Eras and MonsterVerse

The simplest Godzilla watch order is release order, but the films do not form one continuous story. Toho's Showa and Heisei runs have their own continuities, most Millennium films reset again, the Reiwa films stand largely apart, and Legendary's MonsterVerse is a separate American timeline.

What is the complete Toho release order?

Toho's live-action series begins with the 1954 original. The official Godzilla site groups the classic Japanese films by release date, and that remains the safest order for a first viewing:

  • Showa era: Godzilla (1954), Godzilla Raids Again (1955), King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962), Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964), Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964), Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965), Ebirah, Horror of the Deep (1966), Son of Godzilla (1967), Destroy All Monsters (1968), All Monsters Attack (1969), Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971), Godzilla vs. Gigan (1972), Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973), Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974), and Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975).
  • Heisei era: The Return of Godzilla (1984), Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989), Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991), Godzilla vs. Mothra (1992), Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993), Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla (1994), and Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995).
  • Millennium series: Godzilla 2000: Millennium (1999), Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (2000), Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001), Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002), Godzilla: Tokyo SOS (2003), and Godzilla: Final Wars (2004).
  • Modern Toho films: Shin Godzilla (2016), Godzilla Minus One (2023), and Godzilla Minus Zero (2026).

The three animated films form another sequence: Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters (2017), Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle (2018), and Godzilla: The Planet Eater (2018). They are not continuations of Shin Godzilla.

Which Showa films actually continue each other?

The Showa films share a loose world, but continuity becomes increasingly flexible. The first two are direct sequels. Later entries reuse monsters, organisations and broad history without demanding that viewers remember every prior event. Destroy All Monsters was released in 1968 but is set near the end of the twentieth century, so release order and internal chronology are not identical.

All Monsters Attack also works differently from the surrounding films: its kaiju material is framed through a child's imagination and includes extensive reused footage. Watching in release order explains the footage and changing tone better than forcing the film into a strict timeline.

Why is the Heisei order important?

The Heisei films are the most clearly serialised Toho run. The Return of Godzilla ignores the Showa sequels and follows the 1954 film. From there, characters, technology, Godzilla's changing size, Godzilla Junior and the consequences of earlier battles carry forward through Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. Skipping around is possible, but the final film has more weight after the preceding six.

Does the Millennium series have one continuity?

No. Godzilla 2000, Godzilla vs. Megaguirus and GMK each begin from their own premise, usually treating the 1954 attack as the key historical event. The exception is the Kiryu pair: Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla leads directly into Tokyo SOS. Final Wars then creates another self-contained history for an anniversary spectacle.

Where do the American films fit?

Roland Emmerich's Godzilla (1998) is a standalone American continuity. Its animated follow-up belongs with that film, not with Toho's Heisei or Millennium stories.

Legendary's MonsterVerse order is Godzilla (2014), Kong: Skull Island (2017), Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024). Monarch: Legacy of Monsters adds television stories across the 1950s and the period after the 2014 San Francisco attack. It is useful context, but the films remain understandable without it.

What is the best short order for a newcomer?

For a compact tour, watch Godzilla (1954), Mothra vs. Godzilla, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, The Return of Godzilla, Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, Godzilla 2000, Shin Godzilla, Godzilla (2014), and Godzilla Minus One. That is a sampling route, not a claim that the omitted films are unimportant.

Godzilla Minus Zero follows Minus One and was scheduled for November 2026 when this guide was written. Its exact place is therefore simple: watch Minus One first. Any broader claim about future sequels would be speculation, not confirmed continuity.

Do alternate cuts change the order?

Several Godzilla films exist in Japanese and altered international versions. The best-known example is Godzilla, King of the Monsters! (1956), which edits the 1954 film around new scenes featuring Raymond Burr. The 1984 film was similarly adapted for the American release Godzilla 1985. These are alternate presentations of existing entries, not additional events that need a second place on the timeline.

For a first run, choose the original Japanese version where it is legally available, then explore an international cut if the history of distribution interests you. English dubs can also differ in script and tone without creating a new continuity. Check the disc or streaming listing because a familiar English title does not always reveal which cut is supplied.

What about television and short films?

This list covers feature films. Series such as Godzilla Island, Godzilla Singular Point, the 1998 animated series and the Chibi Godzilla programmes occupy separate formats and continuities. Theme-park films, festival shorts and promotional animations expand the catalogue further.

Completionists can add those productions after the feature run that inspired them. Newcomers do not need to interrupt the Showa list with a later anniversary short simply because both use the same monster design.

What does release order mean if you collect physical media?

Catalogue by the original Japanese film and year, not only the English title printed on a regional case. The Criterion Showa Blu-ray set, released on October 29, 2019, contains all 15 Godzilla films from 1954 through 1975 across eight discs.

Modern release dates also matter when pre-ordering. Toho and GKIDS confirmed Godzilla Minus Zero for Japanese cinemas on November 3, 2026 and North American cinemas on November 6. A theatrical date is not a promise of a particular home-video edition, subtitle track or region code. Collect the announcement that exists, and wait for the exact disc specifications before treating a retailer placeholder as final.

What is confirmed, and what is fan opinion?

The official filmography confirms titles, release years and production groupings. The films themselves confirm direct links such as the Heisei sequence and the two Kiryu features. Release order is therefore a documented list; calling it the best first-time route is this guide's recommendation.

Claims that one era is essential, that a reset should be skipped or that two versions could share a hidden timeline are fan arguments unless a film or official production statement establishes them. A personal marathon can mix eras freely. It should simply be labelled a themed order rather than a canonical chronology.
