Best Ultraman Series to Start With

New to Ultraman? Here's where longtime fans actually point beginners, and why the franchise doesn't require watching in order.

Best Ultraman Series to Start With

"Where do I even start?" is the single most common question in Ultraman fan spaces, and the good news is the franchise is built to answer it easily: almost every series is a self-contained story with its own cast, its own Ultra, and its own tone. You don't need decades of continuity to enjoy any single entry.

You don't need to start at the beginning

The original 1966 Ultraman is historically important and still holds up as tokusatsu history, but it's also nearly 60 years old, and its pacing and effects reflect that. Most current fans didn't start there, and the franchise doesn't expect you to — each era largely resets its cast and setting, so jumping in wherever sounds fun is the normal way in.

Pick by tone, not by release date

Ultraman series vary a lot in mood, and matching that to your taste matters more than chronology:

  • Want something moody and mystery-driven? The Heisei-era entries lean into darker, more atmospheric monster-of-the-week storytelling with real detective-drama energy.
  • Want a big, ensemble team feel? Later series lean harder into a full defense-team cast working alongside the Ultra, closer to a full ensemble show than a lone-hero story.
  • Want the classic monster-fighting formula, modernized? Recent entries keep the giant-hero-vs-giant-monster core intact with current-day effects and pacing, which makes them an easy on-ramp if the black-and-white era feels too dated to start with.

Newcomers consistently point to a small cluster of favorites

Ask longtime fans for a top pick and a handful of titles come up again and again as "peak Ultra" — usually praised for a strong central Ultra design, a well-built human cast, and a finale that actually pays off its season-long buildup. If you only watch one series to decide whether the franchise is for you, picking one from that frequently-recommended cluster rather than the oldest available entry is the better test.

The one thing to know before you start

"Ultra" is the species name for every hero in the franchise; "Ultraman" is a title only some of them hold. It won't affect your enjoyment of any single series, but it clears up a lot of naming confusion once you're watching multiple entries back to back. Full breakdown: Is "Ultra" a Title or a Race?
