Bleach TYBW: Full Recap Before the Final Arc

Catching up before Bleach TYBW Part 4? Here's a straight recap of Parts 1 through 3: the Quincy invasion, the Soul Society's near-collapse, Ichigo's new form, and the death of the Soul King that sets up the finale.

Bleach TYBW: Full Recap Before the Final Arc

Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Parts 1-3 cover Yhwach's Quincy army invading the Soul Society, the near-total defeat of the Gotei 13, Ichigo Kurosaki unlocking a new hollow-fused power called the Horn of Salvation, and the death of the Soul King at Ichigo's own hands — which is exactly where Part 4, The Calamity, picks up. If you watched this years ago and need a refresher before the weekly finale episodes, here's the short version.

What happens in Part 1?

The Wandenreich, an army of Quincy led by Yhwach, launches a surprise invasion of the Soul Society, cutting down several captains almost instantly to establish how outmatched the Gotei 13 is. Ichigo Kurosaki, having lost his Soul Reaper powers at the end of the previous Bleach arc, gets them back and heads into the fight. The part ends on two big shocks: Ichigo unveils a new weapon and power set, and Uryu Ishida — revealed to be Yhwach's son — turns against the Soul Society to fight alongside the Quincy.

What happens in Part 2?

With the Soul Society reeling, Part 2 largely follows Ichigo and his allies venturing into Wandenreich territory to rescue captured captains and push back against Yhwach's forces. A fan-favorite character who appeared to die earlier in the invasion is confirmed alive, and several major one-on-one fights between Gotei 13 captains and Sternritter (the Quincy's elite) play out, setting up who survives into the endgame.

What happens in Part 3?

Part 3 is where the story accelerates toward its conclusion. Yhwach, having absorbed enough power, moves directly on the Soul King's palace instead of continuing to fight the surviving Soul Reapers — his real goal is merging the three worlds (Soul Society, Hueco Mundo, and the World of the Living) back into one, undoing a separation from his own distant past. He defeats Squad Zero's Ichibe Hyosube and the Wandenreich forces cut down Senjumaru Shutara, clearing his path to the Soul King. Yhwach manipulates events so that Ichigo is the one who ultimately strikes down the Soul King himself. In the same stretch, cornered inside Yhwach's inner world Wahrwelt, Ichigo breaks through to a new transformation — the Horn of Salvation — revealing he's been absorbing Yhwach's own spiritual energy throughout their fight to awaken a deeper hollow power, giving him a two-bladed weapon that finally lets him keep pace with Yhwach in combat.

Where does the story stand going into Part 4?

  • The Soul King is dead, and the three worlds are destabilizing as a result.
  • Yhwach has absorbed the Soul King's near-omnipotent power, making him more dangerous than at any earlier point in the series.
  • Ichigo has unlocked the Horn of Salvation, a hollow-fused Bankai form built from energy he pulled from Yhwach mid-fight.
  • Ukitake has revealed a hidden power tied to his own past that connects to the Soul King's role, setting up his part in the endgame.
  • The final battle lines are drawn: Ichigo, Orihime, and Chad against Yhwach; Yoruichi against Askin Nakk Le Vaar elsewhere in the palace.

Do I need to rewatch anything before Part 4?

Not strictly — Part 4 opens directly from where Part 3 left off, so this recap covers the essentials. If you want the confirmed release schedule and story scope for the current season, see our companion explainer.
